Chapter 14

“You just about ready, Skids?” Daniel called from the living room.

“Hold your horses, Indiana. I’m coming.” She hurried into the room and swept her backpack over her shoulder in one graceful movement. She came to a stop in front of him and smiled up into his eyes. “I’m ready.”

Daniel couldn’t stop himself from taking her into his arms for a quick kiss. She was cute, particularly this afternoon in a flowery red sundress. Her sunglasses were perched on top of her head like a headband. There was something about her enthusiasm, the way she smiled at him that made his heart beat double-time when he was near her. After nearly a month together Daniel thought he’d be used to the sensation by now, but it was as if he met a new version of Savannah every day.

He took her hand in his as they walked out to his car. Their outing to the Wolf Creek Settlement Days Festival felt a little like a date, but he kept that thought to himself knowing how she would react to hearing it. She was still gun-shy when it came to dating, though she’d certainly softened toward him since she’d opened up about her breakup with Mark.

Daniel had kept his word and didn’t mention Mark again, and he also noticed that she no longer moved away from his accidental and sometimes not-so-accidental touches. She’d even acquiesced on the topic of exploring the manor and called him to go with her when Rachel wasn’t working. They’d fallen into a comfortable routine. They spent one morning digging through Wolf Creek’s archives looking for possible connections between the people involved in the accidents at Alder Manor and activities going on in Wolf Creek or on the reservation. Details were scarce and more often than not they were more circumstantial than fact, but there was a little that Daniel could use to support his thesis. He was beginning to understand why people still believed in the curse. His question now was why were they perpetuating it?

Even when they spent their days pursuing their individual projects, evenings were always spent together by the lake. Daniel was looking forward to a whole day of living in the present with Savannah. Maybe it would extend into the night.

Before they reached Wolf Creek, they were directed to park in a huge grassy field, and then they walked the rest of the distance, tiptoeing around cars and curbs to reach the sidewalk. The greasy smell of carnival food was the first thing to reach them, followed by the faint delighted screams of the ride-revelers on the far side of town. In between were rows upon rows of booths with goods ranging from homemade dog treats and crafts to truly amazing paintings.

Savannah looked around in wide-eyed amazement, obviously itching to examine and experience everything Wolf Creek had to offer. Daniel squeezed her hand and smiled. “Lead on, Skids.”

“One of these days I’m going to have words with my father for sharing that name with you.
